The Air Jordan 6 represented a significant leap from its predecessors, the Air Jordan 5. The iconic sneaker was once again designed by veteran Air Jordan designer Tinker Hatfield, who opted for a sleeker and more angular silhouette this time around. The Air Jordan 6 was originally released in 1991 and were on Jordan’s feet during his first ever NBA title!
Jordan was quite specific about one or two aspects of this sneaker, such as it’s clean single-piece toe box, which Hatfield ensured was reinforced for strength – the first ever Air Jordan to feature this. He also specified that he needed the heel tab adjusted so that it wouldn’t hit his Achilles tendon, and so the Air Jordan 6 became the first model with a moulded rubber heel tab which stretched backwards away from the sneaker. For ease in slipping the sneaker on, Hatfield also included a rubber tongue upper with two large holes to loop your fingers through.
But it wasn’t just Jordan himself Hatfield was taking notice of. Hatfield also took into account the common feedback and critiques from fans and sneakerheads, including that the Air Jordan 5 became slippery on the court, prompting Hatfield to fit the Air Jordan 6 with thicker, more solid rubber outsoles to prevent this issue from reoccurring.
So how does the Air Jordan 6 fit? The angular toe box and wide foot makes this one of the roomier Air Jordan silhouettes on the market The perforated vent panels provide ample breathability but are also thin for this same purpose. Combine with the lack of inner padding, the thinner rubberised tongue, and the removal of the multiple rows of eyelets for custom lacing, and the Air Jordan 6 becomes a safer bet to purchase at half a size down!
If you have wide feet or are used to a slightly roomy fit for your sneakers, then true to size should be absolutely fine for you. However, if you usually go true to size, then you’ll most likely find the Air Jordan 6 to be a little too large on you! Alternatively, replacing the insoles with a thicker, more padded version may take up a bit of this extra space and make the true size fit perfectly!
